2016 ROYAL COURT BASKETBALL SKILLS CHALLENGE
The Virginia Athletic Council in partnership with the American Heart Association and WVEC Channel 13, held their first annual Royal Court Basketball Skills Challenge at Virginia Wesleyan College. This event, for ages 5 and up, promoted physical activity which is prudent for youth as well as adults demonstrating one of many ways to move towards a healthy lifestyle and "heart-style". Participants enjoyed working with the Skills Challenge Staff led by Marques Fitch, as they navigated through several drills including an obstacle course consisting of timed shooting, passing and defensive skills. The participants also received several motivational sessions including a personal life story from WVEC Sportscaster, Brian Smith.
This event was more than just playing basketball; the Hampton Roads Community was educated, motivated and entertained! Mascots from Hampton University (Pirates), Norfolk State University (Mr. Spartan) and Old Dominion University (Big Blue) were led by the American Heart Associations Mascot, "Heartman" learning "Hands Only CPR" in front of all the adults and children to the beat of the Bee Gee's hit song, Staying Alive. Although the Basketball Skills Challenge was extremely entertaining for the participants, this educational moment will pay dividends for years to come as numerous families and their children learned how to save a loved one as well as becoming prepared to assist a friend, neighbor and the community!
